READING! “My Paper.li” for Friday, August 7th

Back again with this feature after a Thursday that was too busy to post “My Paper.li” link and stories yesterday.

It’s a quiet Friday, so here’s the full post to take us into the weekend (when I’m not posting this feature, but I am still hand curating the “My Paper.li” and will post on Facebook and Twitter when I’ve done this on Saturday and Sunday mornings)

Happy Hump Day!

Here’s today’s quote from Franciscan Father Richard Rohr’s daily email that I receive from his Center For Action and Contemplation.

As I start my day with this rich wisdom and share it with you, I hope it helps your day to be the best it can be!

Mysticism begins when we start to make room for a completely new experience of God as immanent, present here and now, with and within all of us.

God isn’t only transcendent, “out there,” and separate from me.

Augustine of Hippo (354–430) wrote that God is “more intimate to me than I am to myself.”

St. Catherine of Genoa (1447–1510) said, “My me is God: nor do I know my selfhood except in God.”

Like all mystics, they overcame the gap, and we can too.

When God is no longer out there or over there, we have begun the mystical journey.

It’s not simply that we have a new relationship with God.

It’s as though we have a whole new God!

Here’s the “World News in Prayer” for this past week.

James Hohmann in today’s hard hitting episode of the Daily 202 Big Idea Podcast tells about how completely broken the GOP controlled Senate is in its shameful inability to bring together the urgently needed additional relief for the millions who have lost additional unemployment benefits and/or are at risk of rental housing eviction. And this is just one of four stories of gross, ugly corruption in our world today which Hohmann describes in his always thoughtful, direct and insightful manner.

Father Richard’s “Prayer For Our Community”

O Great Love, thank you for living and loving in us and through us.

May all that we do flow from our deep connection with you and all beings.

Help us become a community that vulnerably shares each other’s burdens and the weight of glory.

Listen to our hearts’ longings for the healing of our world. [Please add your own intentions.] . . .

Knowing you are hearing us better than we are speaking, we offer these prayers in all the holy names of God, amen.

Finally, since there’s no big Summer Vacation for me and my family in 2020, I’m reviewing photos from great past Summer Vacations.

This is two years ago when we went to Nashville and then on to Panama City, Florida.

It was a World Cup Summer of 2018 and a high point of this trip was when we stopped for lunch to watch a key match. It was at this little Irish pub not far from the beautiful beach where I snapped the photo I shared on Wednesday.
