I didn’t get the chance to post the links to the top stories from today’s “My Paper.li” There were some quite good ones from Saturday which I recommend that you check out:
[COVER STORY] “A Call For a Declaration of Interdependence”
The photo from Bing.com for today is appropriately patriotic:
And if you go to the site to view it, there’s a cool, animated 3D effect of fireworks.
Here’s a photo from Friday which I imagine just about 40.7% of Americans will find patriotic and even inspiring:
Putting aside the COVID-19 risks of attending POTUS#45’s speech and Mount Rushmore’s ages old controversy of being on land taken from the Lakota Nation, the speech he gave was deeply troubling because it wasn’t spoken to the American people as a whole.
Rather it was to the declining slice of the U.S. population who see him as a “culture warrior.”
POTUS#45 played this up in the opening section of his speech:
And yet, as we meet here tonight, there is a growing danger that threatens every blessing our ancestors fought so hard for, struggled, they bled to secure.
Our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values, and indoctrinate our children.
Angry mobs are trying to tear down statues of our founders, deface our most sacred memorials, and unleash a wave of violent crime in our cities.https://www.rev.com/blog/transcripts/donald-trump-speech-transcript-at-mount-rushmore-4th-of-july-event
These citizens – those of us who are marching for racial justice and seeking a reckoning with the U.S. history of genocide of native people and enslavement of African people – are causing:
The violent mayhem we have seen in the streets and cities that are run by liberal Democrats in every case is the predictable result of years of extreme indoctrination and bias in education, journalism, and other cultural institutions.
Against every law of society and nature, our children are taught in school to hate their own country and to believe that the men and women who built it were not heroes but that were villains.
The radical view of American history is a web of lies, all perspective is removed, every virtue is obscured, every motive is twisted, every fact is distorted and every flaw is magnified until the history is purged and the record is disfigured beyond all recognition.https://www.rev.com/blog/transcripts/donald-trump-speech-transcript-at-mount-rushmore-4th-of-july-event
The part of his speech which troubles me the most and should trouble any follower of Jesus the Christ is this section:
The radical ideology attacking our country advances under the banner of social justice, but in truth, it would demolish both justice and society.
It would transform justice into an instrument of division and vengeance and it would turn our free and inclusive society into a place of a repression, domination, and exclusion.
They want to silence us, but we will not be silenced.https://www.rev.com/blog/transcripts/donald-trump-speech-transcript-at-mount-rushmore-4th-of-july-event
Remember it was Jesus, in the Gospel of Luke who said this (emphasis is mine):
16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
Yep, Jesus was “The First Social Justice Warrior”
Finally, what did POTUS#45, on a day when the U.S. set a new record with over 57,000 new, confirmed cases of COVID-19, say to the American people about this crisis of illness and death in which we find ourselves right now?
To end on a more hopeful note and to feature a competition in which zip, zero, zilch of the competitors will contract COVID-19, here’s where we are after the first two events of the Marble League 2020:
The next event, Newton’s Cradle, will be released on YouTube, this Thursday the 9th.
